Volunteer Canyon

A scenic hike through a rarely visited canyon in the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness.

From the parking pin, follow the gully down to the main canyon.

In the approach gully, a 50' basalt headwall will stop your progress. Skilled hikers can find a way around this obstacle without ropes by cautiously downclimbing on the LDC side. Most will want to bring a 30-40' rope and downclimb ~10' to a knot chock anchor on the left side. Leave the rope in place for a handline on your return. Once in the main canyon, hike ~ 1 mile through coconino narrows to the confluence with Sycamore Canyon.
